I think there is hope for you...you finally broke away from cable..so anything is possible..I know it was hard for you to leave your friends at the cable company...but you did..and that took courage...

You could strike a blow for freedom and grab one of the last Panasonic plasmas...I know you are squeamish about plasma...but maybe you could just get over your fears and be rewarded with some quality and finally you can unite audio and video...like Eddie and the Cruisers...words and music...well sort of...more like video and music..but you know what I mean...

You only live once. If you jump in on a Plasma the ST is a steal.
Size counts. Get a 60 at least, and then wait patiently until OLED becomes affordable.

    I intend to wait impatiently

It is difficult introducing a new display technology without up-setting the apple-cart. Which, in a predominately Plasma forum environment, is an overwhelming task.
LCD/LED people are somewhat less compelled to stick steadfast to a given technology.
My personal preference is governed by PQ as the priority driven question here.
I hope the manufacturers will at least perfect the technology before trying to jam it down our throats.

Last shootout, LED were dead last. From the experts and the "public". Industry may not make the smartest choice always coupled with the correct price point. It makes almost all 32" at 720p. Now will 55" at 4k sell at 3 times higher price? Time will tell.

The shoot out results are a more "scientific " orientated crowd. Hardly reflective of anything going on in the industry or retail .The winners of all the shoot outs have all gone on to be out of business or are discontinued from manufacturing with no follow ups due to poor performance. All the elites by pioneer. The sharp elite line. . And well. You know the rest of the story. We all know in an enthusiasts tv forum plasma is the best scientific pq. But my greater point was there are a lot more people who feel otherwise with there own definition of pq.

But we all know that here.

The general population gravitates toward brightness and the various apps a display offers...people on av forums look for specific aspects of PQ as illustrated thru numbers..we just forget that we are very very small in numbers...unfortunately not enough to have an impact on sales and future designs...

This is interesting because some people have felt 4K is overshadowing OLED in terms of the general public's perception and yet OLED is the more significant technological breakthrough. But from an industry perspective I think it does make sense. The production volumes of 4K LCD's can be ramped up pretty quickly and it is certain to become a mainstream product. For OLED that will take a lot longer, and it may never be mainstream.

what will happen in a few years when the average buyer has the options: "OLED 1080p" and "4K" and ditches the first option simply because has lower resolution and so it's "old fashion"?

it happened with plasma also with LCD (you know, "LED" is newer and so it's better), average buyer might think that 4K is better than 1080p OLED

    who knows?

Display should match source on this. Panasonic displays can be switched to either range, but 220 is standard for video. At least if I'm understanding your question correctly.

There seems to be a belief among some videophiles that they should duplicate the monitors used in post-production so they can see exactly what was intended. This is incorrect. The monitors used in post-production allow the wider 0-255 range and are often 10 bit (0-1023) anyway to ensure there is nothing outside the consumer video level (16-235) that gets missed. In reality if you are using anything other than 16-235 levels for consumer sources you are NOT seeing what was intended. This a problem with a lot of calibration disks that say you should not clip video levels above 235 but you are throwing away a lot of the brightness your display is capable of if you follow these recommendations. Similarly, grading monitors used in post-production are relatively small (usually about 19-24 inches) , have a high gamma (2.4), and are quite dim (30 ft-L) to prevent eye fatigue while working for long hours. These settings will not translate well to the typical living room.

General population ? The shoot out every one of the forum guys and forum fans picked the brighter Samsung !! Not the deeper blacks of the vt or zt. At least the experts picked the les bright panel. Boy did I lmao

I would go for "1080p OLED" for two reasons, we already have content and I think "4K" is more a "numbers point" for marketing reasons. My opinions of course.

Not every one...but that was an illustration of a weakness of the shoot out...why not just let the experts voice their opinions...the audience should be there to watch....it's like going to a medical convention and bringing people in off the street to voice their opinions on technical matters..

I will say this...prior to the shootout all you heard on these forums was black levels. 24/7...then all of a sudden brightness was important at the shootout...I must admit I was baffled by the sudden shift..I mean people argue ad nauseum on forums about the smallest decimal point of difference in black levels...
