Well I know not everyone I was exaggerating but the point was made. The result went to brightness. Not black.
Speed it's exactly like you said. Grumble grumble abl 40 plus ftl etc. I tune out

The issue not that some LCD's aren't great, its that side by side and equal cost, flagship plasmas usually destroy the comparable LCD. More people would agree if it had been presented to them properly and they actually knew better.

Next few years are going to be bumpy. OLED is launching (not perfect but hey the MLL is low LOL), 4k is coming. Speaking of 4K I read a good article from Joe Kane on HDMI 2.0 with a lot of interesting tidbits. At the end he still sticks to his recommendation of not buying a 4K display unless it has a Display Port, because of problems down the road.

Next few years are "adopt at your own risk" and it would have been nice that an easily found and inexpensive quality display (see plasma) had lasted a little longer than it will. I mean its great that the mass likes cheap Vizio's or the bottom tier 70" Sharp because they are cheap (and not actually that good), but that doesnt mean they are right. There is a general lack of interest in quality now, and I'll personally refuse to be chipper about it.

I think it is clear now that the Hoi polloi favor bright displays.
From the look of it, OLED should be able to compete well in this regard.

I will say this...prior to the shootout all you heard on these forums was black levels. 24/7...then all of a sudden brightness was important at the shootout...I must admit I was baffled by the sudden shift..I mean people argue ad nauseum on forums about the smallest decimal point of difference in black levels...
In the shootout, it is mostly about black level.
In the showroom, it is all about brightness.

I agree with the experts, but lose the showroom and you just lose.

Plasma can do fine in some showrooms like Paul's where real content from DirectTV is displayed.
It does not do well in big box stores or and Best Buy/Magnolia where the demo feeds include content that is largely 100% white (yellow is just as bad) due to the ABL circuitry.
Plasma will go from 40+ fL to 10+ fL where LED/LCD will maintain 50+ fL.
Even the Samsung does not fare well with these feeds.

I love Plasma, I buy Plasma displays but this is the unfortunate truth.

    AVJ,

Quick question that I didn't see answered her (although it is a new thread). Does Panasonic expect to ship any more S64 models to Sam's or Costco? I have friends in the market for TVs and they all love mine but we can't find current inventory. I need to know if they should hold out hope of seeing new S64s hit the shelves or start considering other models or grey-market retailers that have them.

    Any word?

Nope final shipments are done. They should have limited inventory. Few hundred if that left.

I just can't understand why these models didn't fly off the shelves...it's an even better deal than the ST series...look at these comments

How much longer does everyone think the big online retailers will realistically continue to have stock in the ST lines? I'm debating either a 50 or 55 to replace my lowly 32" Sharp LCD but money is tight right now. On the other hand I don't wanna experience what happened with Pioneer again. I'm leaning towards Amazon since they have 24 month interest free financing. I know no one can predict the future but if I wait until November do you think I will be S.O.L? Thanks for any advice!

That's a real shame. This is by far the best "bang for the buck" TV I have ever bought.

    Thanks for the info AVJ.

50" there is plenty of. 55" and up it'll be tough.

Really? No Costco in Oregon has them, the SKU is marked inactive and the Depot shows zero. Maybe other regions are more flush with these models?

I would say this..November is Friday...if you are going to take advantage of 24 month no interest financing there isn't really much point in waiting...you will have 30 days to come up with 1 payment...the other problem with waiting is the supply...let's say you wait until the last minute and buy one of the few remaining units...you will probably pay more but more importantly what happens if you get a defective unit...then there is no replacement because they are all gone..based on the current price on amazon($1295) the minimum payment due will only be about $30(my guess)...

Since you mentioned the 55ST60..consider this...right now to upgrade to the 60ST60 it would only cost you $154.00 for 5 inches more screen size...in fact 2 days ago the price on the 60 had dropped to within $60 of the 55...unless you can't accomodate that screen size that would be a huge mistake from a value standpoint..even at the present $154 difference over the course of 24 months is only an increase of $6.24 a month...a SMALL price to pay for a much different video experience...but in all fairness I must make the following disclaimer

DISCLAIMER-the opinions in this post have been given by a person that for value reasons chose to order a 65inch screen while sitting only 5 feet away..so please consider this when taking advice from said poster..

Costco only elected to bring them into select stores. Those store should have some remaining inventory last I heard. But I'm about 2 weeks behind in my inventory checking. I've just been too busy with dealers

I have never gone to a theater and left in disgust because the screen was too big so I expect you are not getting too many complaints
