Default 4K vs OLED the next Panel wars ...... Your Thoughts ?

    werthliving.com

As we await the new offerings of 4K vs OLED panels, the heated discussions will begin. The biggest problem presently affronting buyers is the price range these new panels are being brought to market at. IMHO their too expensive for early adapters, although I could be proven wrong.. I'm sure there will be those too whom price is of no concern, they must have the newest/latest technology, and thanks to them we will discover the faults and short comings of these technologies.

I'm not so sure Videophiles will jump in too quickly due to the fact that these are too new, and an unproven technology, and the cost of being a guinea pig, especially with the economy in it's current state, will temper the buying public.

The advantage of OLED vs 4K is that OLED will not require an entire new media source, it's basically an improvement of current source material and will not involve a complete system upgrade.

    Your thoughts........

My personal opinion is that in 6 to 10 months we will see 4K sets being offered with deep discounts.

Sadly, for the TV manufacturers it's just the opposite. OLED requires significant investment, while a 4k LCD panel is easy, it's just a higher pixel density panel, something they already can crank out easily.

The first flat-panel televisions, meaning the first plasmas, were tremendously expensive -- $10,000 to $20,000 for 42-inch widescreen SD. Being an early adopter often entails spending gobs of money. The first CD players sold for about $1,000. The first VCRs went for around $1,500 if I remember correctly, almost 40 years ago. A 4K display doesn't really require upgrades anywhere else in the system, although it's sort of pointless without UHD sources. Many, probably most, people who buy early 4K displays won't know anything about that stuff though. It's a bigger number, so it must be better.

My thoughts exactly, not to mention greedy sales people who won't educate buyers either being afraid to lose a sale or even more so, not know the difference themselves, taking advantage of those uneducated buyers.

Before thinking of a 4k display, I'm still waiting for 4k media, and NOT proprietary media like Sony is attempting with their FMPX1 4K Ultra HD Media Player.

Not sure I agree with the framework of this argument. 4K is just an increase in resolution, something OLED can also take advantage of.

My thoughts as well. I assume all the quality OLED displays will have the 4K capability as well. Just a quess, but I'm also thinking it will be at least 2 years before we see a proliferation of 4K movies. As for USA broadcasting 4K in the near future, forgitaboutit. I like OLED 4K, but I also realize it's going to take time for this change to occur, much less be affordable to the average consumer.

Don't care at all about 4K at this time.
Always possible that could change in a few years.

For now, simply hoping current Plasma panels hang on until OLED becomes affordable....

Both my brother (65") and No 1 Son (55") have bought VT60s within the past month.
We debated, but have decided to stick with our 60ST50 - whose PQ has improved as it has aged - and especially after setting up & running the 55VT60 in the same room as the ST50.
Admittedly, the VT60 was running Straight-out-of-the-box settings (THX & Cinema, per recall), whereas the ST50 has been modestly tweaked - but if there was a difference in Black Levels (as judged by letterbox bars) between the two sets, we could not spot it.

I did think the VT60 showed a greater dynamic range (contrast) in some dimly lit scenes, and its picture seemed a bit "clearer" at times - but the latter might be simply due to it being a smaller panel and/or that we viewed it from a shorter distance.

In any event, ST50 acquitted itself very well - which made my wife Very Happy!!

Yeah, sorry, just posted elsewhere on this very subject - 4K v OLED is a false argument, they are 2 different things, not competing formats. I think you will need OLED 4K for a decent 4K panel anyway.
I cant see where the bandwith for 4K transmissions is going to come from, they are already compressing the life out of 1080i signals as it is ? And as for a 4K Bluray type format, no sign of that yet either. I hope 4K goes the way of 3D.

    ^^

    I agree.

Unless Samsung blows me away with their plasma this year my next display will likely be a 4k OLED, in about five years, assuming it is affordable.

Good question, not sure. What I can say is that the majority of 4K panels that have surfaced so far seem to be LCD.
