    Default Disco's ModNation Racers Review

    ModNation Racers

    PS3

    Racing

    The review is finally up!

Ever since E3 2009 ModNation Racers was a title that I had high hopes for. I love Kart racers. I grew up playing Mario Kart on the SNES, and it's later iterations. But in recent years, and especially with Mario Kart Wii I have grown a bit disenchanted with the series. In the age of downloadable content and game expansion MK Wii really let me down. That's mostly due to Nintendo's business model. There were no downloadable tracks, online play limited to the Wii's friend number system made it difficult to play online with friends. And I don't even want to get started on the series' infamous rubber band AI, and cheap weapons.

In every way that Mario Kart has failed us over the years the folks at Sony have made up for. Sony created the "Play, Create, Share" genre for consoles with Little Big Planet, and continue it here. You can create damn near anything here. You create your "Mod" (your racer), your Kart, and you can even make tracks. The tools do perform these tasks are incredibly intuitive. Don't be intimidated to jump in and start creating, it can be as simple or as advanced as you want. If you don't feel like creating your own, you can simply go download other people's creations. And wow have people been creative. You can search and download great recreations of almost anything. Barack Obama to Optimus Prime, someone has created it. Including Karts like the Batmobile, and Waste Management trash trucks. If you can think of it someone has probably created it.

Track creation is another beast all together. When I first read you would be able to do this I figured it would be excruciating difficult and time consuming. Not so much my friends, my 4 and 8 year olds were both able to create great tracks in a matter of minutes. You simply drive in the direction you want to go, and use the right stick for elevation. Put in as many twists and turns and crazy stuff as you want. Then once your track is laid you can go in and add buildings, and all the other stuff on and around your track yourself. Or you can just let the game populate it for you. It's really incredible and gives this game a never ending level of longevity. The creation content in here is really amazing and it's so hard to explain just how much. You'll really just need to get your hands on it yourself. Remember you don't have to take the time to create all this content, the game comes pre-loaded with content, and you can download anyone else's created content.

None of these creatioin tools really matter though if the game plays like shit. Trust me folks it doesn't. If you've every played Mario Kart you will feel right at home. Racing has a very natural feel to it. You can adjust your Kart handing for speed, drifting and handling to make it fit your play style. As you drift you will fill your boost meter, this can be used for the obvious reason of boosting your speed or to use a shield to protect you from attacks. And boy does that come in handy. Weapons in ModNation are rowdy, none of your powder puff Mario Kart weapons. A well timed shield use will save your ass, and keep you in the race. There aren't very many weapons in the game, but they each have 3 level and that goes up based on how many weapon pods you have driven over. Weapons on level 3 wreak complete havoc on the track.

The game features a 28 track career mode with cutscenes and story. It is at moments funny and cheesy. It's good stuff. Your created character (or downloaded one) is what's presented in these cutscenes. Naturally I have a Batman creation. Each race features 3 different goal options to unlock more creation content, and a grudge match against the track Pro. These extra features will keep you coming back and can be quite challenging. Online racing is where it's at for me. I prefer the challenge of racing real people and the game doesn't fail here either. You can race solo tracks, or in a series mode where points are accumulated for each race. On top of just that there is a "Hot Lap" of the day. A random track daily to compete with the online world for best score. You also have the option of 4 player local split screen, and you can take split screen online. Though as expected the game takes a small frame rate hit when in split screen.

My one real bitch with the game is the load times. They aren't fast as we've come to expect, but they aren't intolerable either.

    Story and Presentation

Cute single player career mode story that features your character. Menu's are well designed and keep everything at your fingertips. Load times can be a drag, but don't ruin the experience

    8.5

    Graphics

No Uncharted 2 (yeah that's my top standard) but the game looks great. Plays smooth as a baby's ass as well. Weapon effects are great.

    9.0

    Sound

Good voice work that adds to the light atmosphere. Some funny cutscenes and witty dry humor included as well. In game music is annoying to me, but some may like it. Good weapon sound effects.

    8.5

    Gameplay and Mechanics

Great controls, instantly familiar to anyone who's played Mario Kart. Game is challenging without being cheap and frustrating. Love the weapons and the shield function.

    9.5

    Longevity

Huge online community with a never ending stream of content, and free at that. This game could eat up tons of hours.

    10

    Verdict

This is a great game. Great for the family as well, they've logged plenty of hours into this already with no end in sight. It's a top notch racing game, great controls, great graphics and runs smooth with is extremely important in any game, but especially a racer. The creation content is really where this game kills. It gets my highest recommendation, give it a rent if your not sure the genre is your cup of tea. If your a Mario Kart fan though, just go buy it.

I'd be surprised if they don't. Only bad thing is the load times, but it's still a big hit around the house here.

It's a cool idea and all, but after playing the beta I can honestly say I'm not interested in it.
The racing mechanics were a little too simple for me, and I'm just not a make everything super creative kinda guy either. Just not up my alley.
