    Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

    PC, MAC

Rated T for Too long of a wait for a sequel.

Starcraft II was released on July 27th 2010. The original released March 31st 1998. Talk about a wait.....whew. Blizzard has a long history of taking forever to make games, and delaying them extensively. But they do this to create an extremely polished experience. Starcraft II is no exception to this.

If you've played the first Starcraft you will immediately find everything here very familiar as far as the gameplay is concerned. Familiar in a good way though, not like a retread. Starcraft II is currently split into 3 games, Wings of Liberty which is out now and contains the campaign for the Terrans (Humans). Heart of the Swarm which will contain the Zerg (bug aliens) campaign. And Legacy of the Void the Protoss (super advanced aliens) campaign. This has upset many a fan, but even with just the one campaign you are getting a great deal of gameplay here.

The campaign mode features extremely diverse missions and great story telling from Terran hero Jim Raynor's point of view. Production values are extremely high here. On quite a few missions you will be faced with making a decision or siding with one side over the other. I would imagine these choices will affect the expansions as well. Not much I can say about the story that won't give too much away so I'll keep my lips zipped on the rest of it.

This game is playable on a Mac or PC via the same game disk, or you can buy a digital version via Blizzard's online store. I played the game on my Late 08 Unibody Macbook Pro. I was able to run everything at native resolution and medium settings and the game looks great. If you have the horsepower you can take it far higher.

The original Starcraft revolutionized the Real Time Strategy genre. Starcraft II simply improves upon it in every way.

    Story and Presentation

Great Sci Fi story telling. If your a geek like me you'll eat it up. Production values are off the charts here.

    9.5

    Graphics

It's an RTS so it's a different kind of pretty than most games. On medium settings for me I found the game to look great. Would love to see it on Ultra on a super high res screen.

    9.0

    Sound

Great battle sounds. Hilarious responses from your units. An epic score. Don't miss out on the ridiculous juke box on your ship.

    9.0

    Gameplay

Instantly familiar gameplay for those used to the genre. Great variety in campaign missions. Multiplayer gives you all three races to play with and they all play completely different. Yet well balanced.

    9.0

    Longevity

Reasonably long campaign. Online multiplayer. Ton's to do here if your into it.

    9.5

    Verdict

Worth the purchase for the campaign alone. Add in the multiplayer and the coming expansions and you've got a hell of a package. I recommend picking up Starcraft II to anyone who's a fan of the RTS genre. And this is a great game to give the genre a chance if you never have before.

Probably four of those views were from me. I no longer game, but I do like to keep up with what's going on in this field, and I certainly remember the old glory days of the original Starcraft. I gotta admit: from your review and screenshots, this successor does look darned good. Oh, to be young again ...

    Yours,

I've never been able to get into RTS games. I have tried. My roommate in my freshman dorm played Command and Conquer: Red Alert religiously. I tried getting into it but failed miserably. I also tried the Halo Wars demo and again, just didn't get into it. I think they're a little too passive for me maybe?
