Default New Forum - Lets get Healthy!

With all the recent health issues we've had on the board to some close friends, I thought it would be a great idea to start a Health & Wellness Forum.

Well about a year ago I noticed I didn't have quite the same body I had at 25. LOL Bought a Total Gym and and work out 3-4 times a week and choke down whey protein shakes.

The best health thing I ever did was a Liver Cleanse. Which consist of juicing, cutting out any processed foods, and meats. Did it for two months and never ever felt better. Which is common sense. Cut out all the crap food and eat fruits, veggies, fish, and a little chicken.

Sounds like a silly question, but when you started that drastic change - did you initially feel like crap? You know, sort of like stopping caffeine?

Not at all! Just the opposite I felt incredible. I would juice in the morning and I swear it was a rush. It was like drinking a red bull. I would mix beets, orange, apple, carrots, dandelion, celery, and a bit of cabbage. Mix is all up and suck it down. I did this for two months. You can eat all the fruits and veggies you want. Put it this way. My liver count was scary high and my blood pressure was through the rough. Did this for two months (followed it the the T) and I applied for life insurance after the cleanse and got accepted as exceeds (or whatever they called it). I did it another time for a month. I haven't did it in over a year and I feel it. It's almost that time again.

Another example. My Wife's dad is 80. 20 years ago he had a cancerous tumer removed from his chest. The doctor wanted to do more surgery and chemo and he refused. He just felt so weak as it is. He loaded up on Vitamins and Herbal (through a dietitian) and he's been cancer free still to this day, and still takes the vit and heberals. If you met this guy you'd never believe he's 80. So much damn energy.

I did the cleanses when I first started getting serious about my health...fasting too...now I no longer need to do those as I have been able to maintain my levels...just cutting out the bad saturated fats from your meals is a great start...it's amazing how many excellent tasting foods there are that are good for you...

If you want to really juice...don't waste your money on the Jack LaLanne juicers...they waste the best part of the fruit and veggies..and just give you the juice...If you can come up with $400 buy a blendtec...they are awesome...better than a vitamix IMO...I bought one thru Costco and you get an 8 year warranty...you can make just about anything with them....I see now they have a lower starting price with one jar included...check this out

I have incorporated some key foods in my meals...I call them my "anchor" foods..I eat salmon 2 or 3 times a week...but small portions..usually 3 or 4 ounces..avocados..walnuts...almonds and almond butter...almond butter is a great substitute for peanut butter...I made the switch to whole wheat bread several years ago...big health difference..and now I love the taste of whole wheat...my pasta is whole wheat too...non fat yogurt(Chobani is my favorite)..blueberries..kiwis...mangos...I don't eat many oranges because they are so acidic..

If you just watch your "bad saturated" fat and balance your carb intake...it will provide many health benefits...good saturated fats are found in salmon and avocados..by balancing your carbs I mean spreading them out during the day...this requires you to monitor your consumption...instead of eating a big meal...eat more smaller ones...I actually use a notebook(like you would use in college)and track my food intake every day...it's like a food diary...before I started watching what I ate my cholesterol was 178..which isn't really bad...I lowered it to 134!...I actually raised it to 144 because my good cholesterol was too low...I don't eat red meat and only chicken..turkey and fish...and of course veggies and fruit...

For someone that likes soup...here are 2 healthy choices that I like..usually I wouldn't eat soup from a can...but Amy's products are worth it and they have "low sodium" choices..their low sodium minestrone soup has around 600mg..which is very low..and it's organic too...I buy it at my local target and it's only $2.24..Amy's Organic Low Sodium Chunky Tomato Bisque soup is another good one...around 700mg sodium level...
