Thanks Rizzo. What's your thoughts on the sharp elite? There's a 60 inch on eBay for $2800 with only 50 hours on the set. Would you buy that or go the hx950 route brand new for $3000? plus you get the extra 5 inches. Thanks for the help.

Edit...forgot to ask, what's your opinion on the Samsung f8500 compared to the pannys and you hx950? any experience with it?

personal opinion (not cause I'm a Sony whore but) at the HD-SHOOTOUT, 2 yrs ago Kevin Miller and Dnice expressed difficulty in achieving accurate color with an uncorrectable teal cast. Besides an ebay purchase you have no return options (?) MPO

I haven't seen the HX950 in person but I thought the Sharp Elite absolutely spectacular; on par with the Kuro and VT60. I would have bought one had they not cost so much. I don't fuck around with pro calibrating; I just find settings and tweak based on personal preference so most calibration level differences are going to be negligible.

Even pre-calibration it showed a teal cast, i was a good set but a few owners had to return it because of that

See Kevin Miller's review re the Elite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DQwxW_U1ow

The majority didn't seem to be bothered by the cyan issue...of course the owners will be more dismissive since they would naturally feel the need to justify the purchase, but I've heard it wasn't noticeable unless placed side-by-side with another calibrated panel without the issue. The majority opinion in so far as I can tell is that it's overblown. Gaming requirements would push me toward an LCD these days, whether it be a Sharp Elite or a new Sony.

I knew about the cyan issue but how bad can it be during regular viewing. How many times does the color cyan really display when watching something? my guess is not much. I just messaged the guy on eBay and he said it doesn't come with a warranty but performs "flawlessly". no DSE or any other problems.

That's kinda what I assumed was the case. If you have to use measuring equipment to see the flaw, it kinda isn't that big of a flaw.

Are the black level measurements better on the elite than on the vt/zt? Was there ever a firmware update for the cyan issue? If no, then why not? From reading, it was supposedly an easy fix. Also, will sharp ever release a 2nd gen elite? Does anyone anticipate a 2014 led tv to better the elite? Possibly the vizio FALD sets or maybe the Panasonic's "black levels that will match plasma" sets...

As per K. Miller Sharp (Elite) never attended to the problem, Sharp's effort on the Elite line kinda fell off the charts ....no new models or even talks of a new line ? a sign of commercial failure ?

Yes, and better than any nontweaked Kuro.

Apparently not worth the investment to Sharp since the Elite line was a money loser (which answers your following question, so I'll just omit it).

The Vizio P and R series have a good chance of at least looking comparable, though this is only based on demos. I wouldn't hold Panasonic to live up to the lofty promises of their marketing dept. Sony and Toshiba have some FALD sets on the way also. The coming shootout should be interesting.

I'm looking forward to this years shootout, with all of the newer panels and new tech. Robert is excited too.

I'm halfway interested in the FALDs but even more excited about the OLED(s). Robert is always excited about his shootouts (as he should be ;D).

agreed, their past quality and CS quality has been poor, but this is the 'new' Vizio planning an assault on the hi-end HD Display producers if this set is a good as pre-release reviewers like those at CES (guys like CNET, HTM are impressed. All we need to know is, The PQ quality & dependability (always my priority) and Price (second in priority). ya know like' if it rocks my boat then price is always a negotiable fact within my mind ........(over 10G's) Like holy fuqin shit I can't justify that. (7500.)too much even if it is nice.
(5-6 G's) do able, after a little more convincing reviews by Forum sites by REAL owners, not those J6P reviewers on ebay. I've also become very cynical of "Publications" and their agenda's ?

Maybe they'll surprise us, that would be nice for a change.
But I'm sure if it's THAT good, and that well priced once it hits the streets they should sell off quickly, bought by those with unaccountable funds ??
And if successful I'm sure pricing will change (I my opinion....upward) If they work like they are been projected too, they will certainly get a foot hold in a 'hungry market, what with the demise of Plasma production and the lack lustre interest in 4K tech .....The saving Grace of the LED panels the OLED's. Very nice but too much $$$$$......and they are still unproven in the hands of educated consumers. For that kinda money I'm gonna have to sit back and wait to hear what actual owner have to say and I'm sure once someone gets there hands on one, they'll be critical news immediately at all the FORUMS

Over at HDGuru he expressed some doubt that the Reference series may even really make it to market, since it's not really Vizio's bread and butter. Much like their 20:9 ultra-wide "scope" displays.

    http://hdguru.com/vizios-2014-e-seri...ve/#more-13355

The Reference Series TVs the company showed at CES had a full-array backlight with 384 zones, so those fussy about picture quality may want to hold out for those instead (if they ever arrive).

Yeah there should be a law capping the prices of TV's to 4-digits. I mean, seriously? $20 grand for a television? That's just wrong. And it doesn't cost that much to make it.

There was an 84" LG LM9600 4k TV on display at a local electronics retailer for $16,999 (list price) and this store is going out of business, so they marked down all their products. Most TV's got marked down like 10%. The 84" LG? Day 1, it got marked down to $9,750. 43% off day 1. Quite the markup... Charging such a premium for new tech is annoying.

As far as Vizio goes, once they said the "P" series would be so late, I lost hope for the Reference series getting released.

If you want a "good" 70" LCD, the 2014 W850B Sony is now $2599 on their site. The "W" series has always been a good performer.

Over a year later and still no Vizio Reference series... I regret passing up a 70" Elite which was sold last week for $2500. No other options except to find another 70" Elite or wait for OLED. This 4k non sense is extremely annoying. All it does is drive up prices on TVs. Just give me a 70" LCD or OLED for less than $4000 with as good of picture quality as an elite. 1080P is fine.

Its been 4 years now and there still hasn't been a better LCD than the Sharp Elite. Pretty embarrassing.
