I think the new LG's LH93 and 95 are going to be thinner, and they are LD....when they come out?

    Hi Disco Batman,

If I recall correctly, they used some kind of mirrors to diffuse the light emitted by each LED, thereby smoothing out the backlight much faster than they otherwise could. LG is doing the same thing with their LH93s/95s.

    Hi fvbounty,

Eh. Sometime later this year. Clarence is emailing me a bunch of info tomorrow, so perhaps I'll know more then.

David, my understanding was the mirrors were used in ALL of the edge-lit designs ! And this isnt BS ! The A950 has no mirrors from what i was told.
So draw your own conclusions on how they achieved the supposed successor to the A950 being close to the same thickness as the B8000 Samsung. :D

No where on Samsungs site below do they mention this is an edge-lit LED design but we know it is and they use the mirrors you mentioned inside this B8000:

    http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/d...UN55B8000XFXZA

The extra .4 " versus the B8000 is probably enough space to utilize the full clustered LD dimming boards to cover the entire screen.

I see your point but the new LG LH93/95 is definitley back-lit and not edge-lit and it's very thin. Now I know it has a separate box for all you inputs but still. LG are touting a new method of placing the LED's to achieve the thinness, maybe Samsung does as well and included all the inputs too. Who knows.

Isn't the LG going with the new Wireless HD standard that Panasonics Z1 is using?

    1. Perfectly understandable. I haven't noticed them and hope I never do.

    2. I have a computer monitor for those tasks + a laptop. I have zero desire to use my living room TV as a monitor. Samsung TV's aren't ideal computer monitors anyway. Poor input lag being one of the biggest reasons (esp if you're a gamer) and resolution limitation at 1080p. Plus when I connected my B750 to my laptop, the text wasn't as nice as a true PC monitor, even in PC mode.

Ignoring all that, the PRICE is outrageous for this 8500! Don't bend over for Samsung and let them rape you!

P.S. I really did love my Samsung B750, it's the best CCFL LCD I ever used. Better than a lot of these new LED LD's in my opinion. I just despise Samsung as a company.

    Hi Silverfox1,

Oh, no no no---I know this isn't an edge-lit set. If it were, I wouldn't even consider it. It has a full LED backlight array; that's for sure. If my memory isn't screwing with me, though, they use another, different kind of mirror actually to diffuse (even out) the light from the LEDs on these new, thin locally dimmed sets. I easily could be wrong--they might not be mirrors but something else used to accomplish the diffusion. What I do remember clearly is that the thinner form factor is accomplished via diffusion of the emitted light (by whatever means).

    David

    Ohhhh, hey...

You and I, both, 5150Joker. You and I both. They are a hideous, hideous company. In some ways, they actually might be even worse than Sony (and coming from me, that is true condemnation *cough* un-repented 2005rootkits *cough* killingripitformejust'causetheycould *cough*).

The B8000 was 1.2 " and the 8500 is 1.6 so i assume they might have had enough room or depth to not have to use any mirror diffusion.

Oh-ho. Good point, Ron; perhaps it is just a regular locally dimmed set. I was still thinking of the 8500 in terms of the 9000, which was supposed to be a good bit slimmer, but of course, they axed that one.

This certainly opens the obvious question now: assuming the zone-count and LED-count remain constant between the A950 and the 8500 (not an unreasonable assumption, I think), what exactly will be improved in the 8500 and how extreme will those improvements be? At any rate, I'm still geeked to get a look at one soon and see what it can and cannot do.

    David

Check the Samsung A850 thread at AVS for the story. In short: they stuck me with a TV that had major flashlight/clouding issues and told me to deal with it. They refused to do any warranty work (despite me sending them photos of it) or better yet replace the set. I really despise Samsung.

I would hate Samsung also if that happened to me, I hope this 8500 is OK, I hope we get lucky....if not at least we have 30 days to return....

Joker's experience is not uncommon, sadly. Samsung is a disgusting, disgusting company to deal with, and their build quality is a joke. They do, however, tend to dominate overall PQ in the LCD world and they sure as heck dominate LCD sales.

My approach here as elsewhere is simple: make sure I buy from a retailer I truly trust, so I can deal with him instead of having to deal directly with Samsung. Naturally, given that criterion, my retailer will not be Best Buy (hi, Robert)...

    David

    Hi everyone,

More links for the imminent release of the 8500:

    http://www.businesswire.com/portal/s...94&newsLang=en

    http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php...&id=1249293432

    http://www.hitechreview.com/tv/samsu...-lineup/13743/

One thing that looks encouraging to me is hidden in the fact that the stated contrast ratio is 7 million:1 (hooey, I know, but bear with me). Of course that's not the real-world value anyone will see, but the encouraging thing is that it is much higher than what they announced with the A950. Now, in order to achieve a higher peak brightness (which is the one thing I do assume true from this hooey-spec) with a full 240Hz set, they're going to need a lot of LEDs, right? A lot of LEDs. Like, thousands, maybe. See where I'm going with this?? It is possible that LG is not the only maker with many LEDs and many zones to offer this year. Maybe...

I'll know more once I actually get to try one out, presumably late this month.

    Yours,

    David

I called Magnolia today and it was supposed to be in the Frenso warehouse, the only ones that came in where the 8000's and 7100's no 8500's, so no 8500 this week, typical salesman talk I guess!

    Hi fvbounty,

Dude! Your dudeness. El Dude-a-rino. I humbly submit that as soon as that thing is on display, you owe it to our common obsession to get a gooooood look at that thing and post any reflections and/or pictures you might have to share. :drools:

By the way, it sometimes (not often, but sometimes) happens that what a salesperson has listed in his/her database and what's actually physically present in the warehouse varies. That's what happened with me when I found the first 81F near me in Philadelphia. The Magnolia salesman said they didn't have any yet, but it turned out they did--it just wasn't in his database. Days later, they had one on display and I made the fateful trek. Probably a blind alley in this instance, but just another maybe.....

    Yours,

    David
