I see both sides to this. If you own it you should be able to do whatever you want with it. Like buying a TV or such, but I can see developers losing mucho bucks from the resell market. It's a tough call...

    More news...

Adam Orth, Microsoft Studios Creative Director, Tweeted; 'Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always on' console. Every device now is 'always on'. That's the world we live in. #dealwithit'

Things escalated in the Twitter-verse after some people pointed out that some 'less-connected' areas may not go over well. The MS Creative Director then responded; 'Why on earth would I live there?'

Since then Orth's Twitter account has been protected from viewing, presumably at the request of his employer.

So... a console without optical drive and always on internet access required? Sounds like cloud services to me!

But it will have a optical drive. The always on isn't that big of a deal. It's like saying the Roku is always on. It's a gaming device, but it's also a media hub. So always on makes sense. I highly doubt you'll need always on to play games, but lets wait for may for some actual facts.

There are some places in the country ( including some very rural ares in my state) that are stuck with expensive sat internet or dial up. Also ...shit happens. Cable goes out sometimes as well as DSL Like maybe your dipshit neighbor decides to plant a bush and cuts your line. . Would you not be able to play if the internet is down?
    L2W you will be missed.

They aren't saying how it will work, so we don't know yet if once you're in an authenticated game it would allow you to keep playing. There is some talk it will do periodic checks and if the check fails you get dumped out of the game. That seems pretty extreme and I have a hard time thinking they'd do something so incredibly annoying and anti-consumer. If they do, you just know their algorithm will get "adjusted to be less aggressive" due to "consumer feedback" within a few months of launch...

My guess, yes you could play. They aren't going to ignore an entire of segment of gamer's who don't play on-line. I think the always on has more to do with the xbox live and movie watching, streaming, etc...

Well this is interesting. VGleaks just leaked that the new xbox won't need always on and will not hamper used gaming. MS is releasing a cheaper setup box (right now called xbox mini). This has no optical drive and has all the media stuff that it's big brother has. It's basically a modified 360. This competes with AppleTV, Roku, etc... The beauty of this device is combined with the 720 you can use all of your 360 games locally. Of course this doesn't matter if you currently have a 360. This mini box has to be always on as other streamers are. That's why you had all the confusion with "always-on" stuff and the reason why MS wasn't releasing any information. I actually like this better then what PS4 is doing with all their old games are cloud based and you have to re-buy them. This is actually pretty brilliant.

Wow yeah if that turns out to be true, that's a pretty kick-ass way to get MS into every room

    That's very cool stuff there.

Ok. BTW if I haven't been vocal enough about it before.....I could care less about backward compatibility. Really. if it's a freebee sure. Otherwise I just don't care. If I want to play 360/ PS3 games then I will, I don't buy next gen consoles to play last gen games on them. ( Unless of course they have been remastered and released on the current gen/ God of War 1 /2 come to mind)

I agree. I don't keep games around to even play them. I buy a next gen gamer system to play next gen games. But I do like the cheaper entertainment xbox. Oh, by the way the Xbox mini will play anything on XBOXLIVE also. This is a very creative way in expanding the Xbox name. I'm sure a lot of people just use the Xbox as a entertainment box and thus a big market for it. At least it'll give appletv, googletv, and Roku a run for it's money. It's going to be a fun year with all these gadgets coming out. albeit expensive. Where does the WiiU fall in all of this? I have no idea. I mean I would never ever count out Nintendo, but I just feel that WiiU is a dying console.

Yeah I really does seem to me like that WiiU is a non-starter. It didn't even ship with most of its touted media integration capabilities. It still hasn't enabled the promised integration with TiVo units AFIAK.

Agreed. But the dreamcast is still loved and remembered. Not sure the WiiU will have that same afterlife. Damn, I miss Dreamcast. I loved their marketing "It's thinking" -CC
