Default Next Xbox won't support optical drive game playback -- report

    werthliving.com

The folks over at VGLeaks recently released what it claims is the Microsoft documentation related on its next console, codenamed "Durango." In the longwinded document, which makes mention of improved graphics and an improved Kinect sensor that will be sold with the console, Microsoft notes that only hard-drive-based game playback will be offered.

"Every Durango console will have a hard drive, although its exact capacity has not been chosen," the company wrote in the documentation. "It will be large enough, however, to hold a large number of games. All games will be installed on the hard drive. Play from the optical disc will not be supported."

    Sounds like BS to me.

I dunno, all tech companies are pushing 'cloud' services, and M$ is leading the way.

Don't know about others, but that turns me off. PS4 it is then for me. ( if this indeed true)

There are some things that turn me off, but there are a lot that turn me on.

Interesting...I just want to see the announcement already of the new console. People have it pegged on April 26th.

May just mean that the game has to be installed from disc to hard drive in order to be played.

Exactly. This way the game is tied to your acct. They are looking to kill the used game market.

True. But how many hardware revisions do you think would be done a yr before launch. That's polishing time, work out the bugs and make sure the thing works. The last thing they need is another RROD fiasco.

I dunno what the big deal is... you'll still have games on optical disc... your right to own a hard copy isn't going away.

All games will be installed on the hard drive. Play from the optical disc will not be supported.
The games are installed to the hard drive. Big deal, that's been happening for quite a while now with Xbox 360 titles. The PS4 will do the same thing AFAIK. The optical drives when going full speed are noisy and slower to read than an internal hard drive.

The thing that has most people up in arms is the rumor that the unit will require an internet connection to play them.

When ever I bought a 'puter game that require a live internet connection even for solo play I'd fix 'em so they don't require it! It's just the !@#$%! principle of it!

Yep well Steam is that way, and so it seems is the new PS4 and Xbox 720 games. It's not all the surprising considering the way things have been moving over the course of 5+ years. Really if you're a gamer, you have an Internet connection.

It's funny people are ticked about the game thing, but don't give a crap when all the streaming video services require an Internet connection. Digital copies included with DVD/BD copies require registration and/or check-ins for DRM sake, etc. etc.

Yep . Steam is draconian. Difference with Steam though is pricing. That's why most put up with it. DLC is usually free and the games are super cheap. I remember picking up Fallout-New Vegas for $6.

Isn't your 360 or PS3 always connected to the internet anyways? At least when it's on, no?

I think they are moving away from you buying a game, playing it, then selling it and moving on. This I have a problem with, just like with movies.
