And the whole bass EQ thing is seriously just a joke. I've played bass guitar and ran sound boards for 16 years. You can not seriously EQ bass below 50hz. You either have enough bass or you don't, subs are all about proper power for your room and placement. What your floor is made of will also have a huge impact. A basement with a concrete floor under your carpet? The concrete will eat your low freqs. A normal upstairs room a much smaller sub will go further.

Onkyo sells receivers by out badging other manufacturers.

I'm sure lots of people won't agree with that assessment from me, but it's just my opinion.
I owned a very old Pioneer without the MCACC so I can't comment on it but I do like that with Audyssey you can listen at lower volume when everyone is asleep. It is not the same as Pioneers Midnight mode for sure.

Not to be continually argumentative but Midnight Mode on a Pioneer does the same thing Audyssey Dynamic Volume is doing. They are the same thing.
    I own some stuff.

Keep in mind that what pioneer was doing with their midnight mode years ago when you had a pioneer and what they are doing now may be very different. Also keep in mind that the Anthem has Dolby Volume which will work well for your late night listening. Also the Audessey Dynamic EQ actually just adds more bass when listening at lower volume's, so ultimately you are just able to get a little more bass impact without cranking the volume up. What you really want is a compressor like Dolby Volume or to be able to turn dynamic range compression on.

Disco I could be wrong but I think that Midnight mode and Audessey Dynamic eq might be different, but not to the OP's benefit in regards to Audessey. ADV doesn't compress the signal like most midnight or night modes do, but rather it just makes the sub more dynamic at lower volumes, as you turn the volume up the effect goes away. So in reality I am not sure that it is even helping what the op is trying to accomplish and would be better off using something like midnight mode like you suggested as midnight mode or Dolby Volume will compress the signal and keep volume from spiking up and waking the kids up.

When listening at higher volume dynamic volume should be off but should dynamic eq be off also?

Dynamic EQ will be off once you reach reference level. It is based on how loud you have it. I leave it on all the time. I never use dynamic volume because I have a dedicated room. I can see where it would be useful though.

But if I do not listen at reference level is dynamic eq better on or off?

On. It tailors the EQ for a given volume level. It's complicated but it all has to do with how our ears perceive sound at lower volume levels. Two important things it does is adjust bass levels and surround channels to sound more balanced at lower levels.

    Probably not.

What is the advantage of having an amp?
    (1) If the amplifiers in the receiver cannot drive your speakers to the maximum level you desire without obvious distortion, an amplifier capable of higher output (at least double) will help. (2) If your speakers have an unusual impedance characteristic that makes them hard to drive (which also will be apparent from obvious distortion or shutdown of the receiver), a separate power amplifier may solve the problem.

Will I be able to notice a difference in sound?
Only if the amplifiers built into the receiver are not capable of driving your speakers to the level you want without obvious distortion.

My current receiver cannot be connected to an amp, so is it best for me to upgrade to a high end receiver that has more power and do without the amp or should I upgrade to a receiver that an amp can be connected to and get the amp?
You probably don't need to upgrade, but if you do, and it means scrapping the receiver and going with a separate power amp, look into getting a separate preamp/processor as well -- that makes more sense than getting a receiver and then abandoning its built-in amplifiers altogether.

Even if true, the difference is only 3.3 dB. And what the claim is based on is having all channels driven simultaneously; in practice, it pretty much never happens that all channels are fully driven simultaneously with normal program material. Unless you're hearing distortion, don't worry about it.

Thanks! I even spoke with an Emotiva sales rep and he said there is no need to invest in an amp. In my case I could just get the Onkyo TX NR818 but at 800+ that is a little steep for me just to get XT32. Technology is always updated and later there will be something better.
