Arrow Wii U discs will be single-layer 25GB Blu-ray Discs

    werthliving.com

Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi has confirmed today that games for Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console will be on single-layer 25GB Blu-ray Discs.

The PlayStation 3 also uses Blu-ray discs, mainly single layer, but some games have been put on dual-layer 50GB discs.

When asked, Eguchi denied to comment on the expected 8GB of internal flash memory in the Wii U, but did confirm that external USB drives would be supported.

    NO

Planning to replace that aging Blu-ray player with a Wii U? Not so fast. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says the gaming console won't play DVD or Blu-ray discs, due to patent licensing fees.

Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities. The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.

Hmmm, I think this is really a bad decision by Nintendo. Adding a Blu-ray player will attract more buyers. Just like the PS3 it will eliminate the need to buy an additional Blu-ray player. I'm afraid this will only drop the Wii console behind the Xbox and PS3 in sales.

I have to agree with you here. Such a small licensing fee to pay would help propel this device to a more in demand product. Poor marketing on Nintendo's part I believe which will decrease rather than increase sales.
