    Default Any thoughts on B&W 3.1 Setup using 686B Fronts/HTM62 Center/ PDR-100 Sub

    werthliving.com

I am looking to make my first major home audio purchase, and upgrade, coming from a Sony HT-CT100 Sound Bar. I have been reading different speaker buying guides/tips around the net, to include the good tips in this forum section, but am still unsure if the components I have my eye (ears?) on will be a good purchase.

The components I am looking at are two Bowers and Wilkins 686Bs for the front left and right, a B&W HTM62 for the center and a Paradigm PDR-100 for the sub. I decided on a 3.1 system because my living room setup is one that does not easily accommodate rear speakers, and although I do enjoy the fough surround effect my current sound bar gives I think I can live without it, especially if the front 3 speakers are of high quality. Unfortunately I have not been able to find many professional reviews for these speakers online and would like some more insight before committing to a purchase.

The receiver I intend to buy is a Marantz NR-1504, which I chose due to it having 6 HDMI inputs which I need for the various game consoles and my PC I have and the fact that from what I have read regarding receivers my budget would be btter focused on the speakers than a very expensive receiver. Any Junkies here have any experience with these components or any thoughts to give? I would appreciate any insight given.

I expect that would be a nice setup. But you might want to consider options other than B&W -- Paradigm, for example, or PSB. I think they usually make better speakers, especially for the money.

I'll make sure to audition some when I return to the Hi-Fi store where I priced this setup. So long as they are around the same price and sound better to my un-trained ears I may go for those instead.

EDIT: Mdriggs, are you still in NJ? The store I visited was Hi-Fi Sales in Cherry Hill. You have any suggestions for other locations?

Don't know much about local stores, unfortunately.

That's too bad, but thanks for replying Mdriggs. I have not returned to the store yet, just purchased some new furniture so going to have to wait a bit until another big purchase is made. I'll keep researching in the meantime.

So I returned to the store yesterday and auditioned some of my favorite albums. Loved how the setup sounded and pulled the trigger. $1708 after tax for the wole setup plus speaker wire and stands. Got it all at the best price I could find anywhere and the staff were great in breaking down setup tips and some other basic speaker setup questions I had. So far I love them in my home, has taken some more research and tinkering to get them setup right. Still not too learned on cross over, subwoofer settings and the like but I'm getting there.

Whew, $1700? I suppose that's even a good deal for good speakers... No question why I got into HiFi speaker building

Just for future reference: Never buy speaker cable at an A/V store. You can get 16-gauge stranded-copper lamp cord at a hardware store for a fraction of the cost, and it will work just as well.

Ntruder, yeah it was a bit of a hit on the wallet but I intend to enjoy these for many years to come and as long as their build quality holds up I'll be happy.

Thanks for the advice MDRiggs, I'll take that into account next time I need to pick some up. I am well aware of the over priced A/V cabling mark ups plenty of brands and stores do, but I considered 50 feet of cabling for $45 decent although I am sure as you said a better deal could have been had at a nearby hardware store or indeed somewhere online like Monoprice.

EDIT: Just looked it up on Monoprice, 50 feet for $15 to $16 dollars, yep I got fleeced. Ah well, live and learn.

Below is a picture of the setup, the center was not available on hand at the store so it will be coming in this week but as it is the two 686's and the PDR100 sound fantastic.

Heh, yeah. Loving MGS5 Ground Zeroes right now. Got pretty much all of my systems out here, even a good bulk of handhelds on the coffee table. BTW, anyone have any tips on sub placement? I went with that spot for it mostly since the sub for my sound bar was positioned there due to it also being the input reciever for the system. Not much versed on what needs to be looked for when placing a sub.

I'm limited on placement for mine so it is where is sounds best given the circumstances .
Most use a crawl test .

Thanks for the link, I'll have to give it a shot some time soon. I'm not disappointed with how it sounds currently but I don't want to sell it short.

If you are like any of us you will tweak forever. Lol
Change a setting here, move a speaker there..... Just the nature of the beast.

In a system with a single subwoofer, the best place is almost always in a corner away from any open doorways.
